Jakarta - Over the past six months, TRG's Business Development team has worked with Gilat Satellite to penetrate the Indonesian market, particularly in cellular backhaul (CBH).
Gilat is one of the largest companies in satellite technology, with more than 30 years in the business. It has come to dominate the global satellite market, especially in CBH, which will be essential to accelerating 5G implementation among mobile operators.
TRG's Business Development team, made up of Nana Supriatna and Chairiah (better known as Icha), has proven the capability of Gilat's technology in Telkomsel's network test bed.
Three key advantages of the Gilat system were verified:
1. Direct Layer-2 connectivity, so mobile operators no longer need a router at the BTS side. This significantly reduces investment when deploying 4G or 5G BTS networks in rural areas.
2. Ku-band technology with adaptive modulation, delivering up to 40% bandwidth savings, so mobile operators can confidently install BTS sites backhauled over satellite.
3. Bandwidth pooling, a highly useful feature when urgent capacity is needed at a rural BTS. It can be managed remotely from the NOC at head office, unlike other technologies that require a site visit to swap modules or add hardware.
This series of tests was carried out jointly by the TRG team - Darwin Siboro on the technical side and Sri Suryo Bintoro in operations - together with Gilat and Telkomsel over roughly three months at the Bogor and Buaran sites. The success of these tests opens a wide opportunity to grow our satellite business with Telkomsel, both now and as they roll out 5G networks across Indonesia.
